A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job

This is the story of an art heist that takes place during a Fourth of July party, and what each person in the team was doing.

Sister Nell

Her name was not really Nell, and she was not any variety of nun. She was, until recently, a down on her luck singer and dancer whose manager boyfriend had left her 3 months ago in Denver, after a two week run in Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. Without much money or a car, she took a couple of jobs as a booth girl at local conventions. After a couple of weekends of older guys trying to pick her up, she reluctantly called an old friend she had worked with in high school and asked about work.

Fortunately, despite the fact that he seldom hired former team members back, he needed someone with her talents, so he wired her $500.00 and told her where to meet him in Maryland. Nell’s talents included sleight of hand, acting, singing, juggling, dancing, and singing. All of these would be needed at the party. Her job was to act as the first of several distractions tonight, as well as doing some sleight of hand.

Nell arrived at the Jervison party at 4:00 with the 6 piece band that had been hired to provide music. She was not their regular girl singer, but when the band was offered a cool 2 grand for her to stay home and let Nell take her place, they agreed and did not ask questions. A few days practice and she was ready to go. Her accent was flat Midwestern, and if she had been asked, she’d say she was from Nebraska.

So now, on the small stage and dressed in a sexy red, white & blue outfit, Sister Nell was singing her heart out and waiting for the signal to make her first move. There were only a few people here just yet, mostly the Jervison family and a few others. At one point, as her old friend Smooth Paul walked by, she gave him a wink. She had forgotten how much she loved committing crimes.

It was 3.5 hours until showtime.
