The Monster Files was the frankly genius idea of movie producer and promoter Lawrence Woolsey. In 1953, he had worked promoting The Beast From 10,000 Fathoms . When it became a huge hit, and he heard of similar giant monster movies being planned, he got an idea. Why not take two of the characters from the movie, scientist Paul Nesbitt and Col. Jack Evans, have then be part of a “Monster Files” government agency, then put them or their agents in other movies, and promote the Monster Files aspect?
Apparently, a whole lot of B movie makers thought it was a great idea that would generate some buzz. It did just that, because over the course of 16 movies, audiences loved the Monster Files. In 1962, as the giant monster movie genre began to die off, Woolsey put together a similar television series, but it dealt with ghosts, vampires, werewolves, etc. It was a big hit and ran from 1964 to 1971.
