Skills I Picked Up: Speaking Draconic

(Yet another tip of the old bandana to Spike Jones for suggesting this theme.)

How did I learn Draconic? By being the indentured servant of a dragon for 5 years, that’s how. I made a deal with Malavortix of the Jagged Peaks that if I served her for 5 years, she would transport me to the castle of King ShuNor of Lataxia, plus loan me some enchanted armor and weapons so that I could kill him. It was a risky deal to attempt, but she accepted it.

Most of what I did involved sorting through her hoard for various items, delivering her proclamations to the various creatures that lived in her territory, and mostly just conversing with her about various things. During my second year, she started teaching me Draconic. I picked much of it up pretty quickly, and by the time my 5 years were up, I was speaking it as fluently as a human can.

Then, she kept her part of the bargain and even helped me kill the king and most of his mercenaries. Before we parted, she gifted me the armor and weapons. As you know, I used them to free a nearby kingdom from the Blackfang Goblins, for which I was made king. I expanded their kingdom into Lataxia, tried to be the best king I could, married, and raised a family.

Did I ever see Malavortix again? Oh yes, once or twice a year. She would come visit us in a human form. She was Auntie Mala to my children, and a good friend to my wife. Then, two years ago, just after my 85th birthday, Mala was called to the Dragon Moon, from which she cannot return. We miss her, and every year on that day, I look up at that moon and speak to her in Draconic.
