Skills I Picked Up: Disguise

(Yet another tip of the old bandana to Spike Jones for suggesting this theme.)

Yeah, well, for about 10 years I was the Face for a group that engaged in extra-legal activities. I’d go ahead of them and scout out places and people, rent places for us to stay, make contacts with marks, bribe those who were bribable, that sort of thing.

The whole thing about disguising yourself is to remember that less is more. Most people can’t remember what they had for breakfast, so remembering details about somebody you only met once or twice isn’t going to be much of a thing.

But for people you spend some time with, you need to give them a few specifics to remember. Oh, his hair was brown, medium length, and he parted it in the middle. He wore wireframe glasses and had a Southern accent. That’s all you need, especially the accent, because most people never travel enough to tell an Arkansas accent from a Georgia accent. Use a bit of a French or German accent and they’re convinced you were a foreigner.

You need a good selection of clothing and shoes, but not a truckload. Cars that fit your persona a good, and we had a great car guy. Of course, you need several sets of identification, but you’d be surprised how rarely it comes into play.

Acting skill is very important. You have to act like an FBI agent or wise guy or college student or whatever to pull off the persona. Just remember, most people just accept what you tell them, if you do it properly.

So I hope that answers your question. Now tell me more about how you want to swindle your ex-husband.
