…well, it was the garden what froze, mate
So yeah, it’s been freezing up pretty solidly here the last few nights and the plants in my garden are getting bitchslapped around.
Now, I run a pretty Darwinian garden, so I don’t overly coddle my plants. It’s live or die out there. Oh sure, I mulch everything and I water regularly, but as far as the weather goes, they’re on their own.
This all works out pretty well and I’ve learned that many plants that “won’t survive our winters” do just fine, thank you. Case in point: Lemon Grass. According to all of my plant books, lemon grass is a tropical/subtropical perennial that can only be grown as a tender annual here. Well, I’ve got four hugeass clumps of lemon grass out in my garden and they’ve been there for 3 years now. Sure, the leaves turn brown and die in the cold, but I’ll trim them off in the spring and within a week they plants will be green, lush and lemony tasty. The same goes for my cannas and, I’m hoping, for my dwarf bamboo. Most of my other plants are natives to North America or Europe, so they weather the winter in good shape.
And now, I’m off to clean house before Game Day starts.
