That Time Doc & I Went To…: Port Royal in 1685

If there is one thing that Doc & I love, it’s going back to the 17th Century and being pirates. Not in our universe, mind you, because pirates and life at sea were pretty disgusting. No, we go over to Earth 6-L instead. Pirates there were still lawless scalawags and life at sea was rough, but on that Earth, things were more like a Rafael Sabatini novel. In fact, Doc often uses a body very similar to Errol Flynn for his pirate adventures.

On this one trip, we pulled into Port Royal to give the crew some much needed R&R. There was drinking, gambling, fighting, whoring, theft, arson and running from the law, such as it was. I’m sure the crew had fun, too.

About that arson part. It was the evening of our 4th day in port when a large group of blackguards chased us into a large building at the western edge of town. We were outnumbered about 10 to 1 and once we were in the building, we hunkered down behind some crates near a locked read door. While I busied myself picking the lock, Doc was watching the mob enter the main door, lanterns in hand. Just as I got the lock open, Doc shot one of the lanterns, which created a decent sized fire on the straw covered floor.

That was when we could see that this was a gunpowder storage building.

As the mob turned and ran out the front door, we ran out the back. We got about 100 yards away and dove behind some boulders just as the place blew up. Flaming pieces of building went everywhere and pretty soon, most of Port Royal was on fire.

At that point, we called up the Bus and came home to this reality. Talk about an explosive finish to an adventure!

That Time Doc & I Went To…: Rick’s Cafe Americain

.

I suggested it as kind of a joke, but damned if Doc didn’t take us there. Once we got dressed up properly, we went in and it looked just like in the movie.

Rick himself greeted us and yep, he looked exactly like Bogart. It was trippy. He bought us a drink and then we sat down and I listened to him and Doc catch up with each other. They seem to have known each other for years.

When Rick excused himself to deal with some problem, Doc informed me that we were there a year ahead of Ilsa Lund and Victor Laszlo. He wished that he could warn Rick, but it would only cause problems.

When Rick returned, he had Captain Louis Renault with him and he introduced us. Doc addressed him in accent free French, because just like Sasha, he has a Universal Translator implanted in his neck. Renault was impressed, but still gave us a vague warning to not step out of line.

So the rest of the night was us drinking and dining and swapping stories with Rick and a few other folks. It was a great night out. Now I’m thinking of asking Doc about visiting another movie watering hole, like Club Obi Wan or the Cobalt Club or maybe the Mos Eisley Cantina.
