Rare Birds: White Winged Jackhammer
.
Although many people consider this bird the most annoying avian on the planet, that is only because they’ve never encountered an Eastern Crapping Crow. Still, the White Winged Jackhammer is very annoying.
A relative of the woodpecker, the Jackhammer is larger than any of them and is only a bit smaller than a crow. It’s body is a medium brown color, with the wings being very white. The bill is quite large and when not being used to drill holes in trees, is a very effective killing device for everything from insects to small mammals.
Jackhammers mate in April and May and tend to gather in flocks of 20 or 30 birds. The prefer to nest in hardwood trees, especially oaks. The males begin drilling next holes early in the morning, usually right around sun up. Because of their size, the drilling is much louder than a woodpecker. Combine that with the fact that the female sits near the male screeching “ACKACKACK” and you can see why many people hate them.
The White Winger Jackhammer is not on any endangered species list. It is, in fact, quite common.

Rare Birds: Large Footed Macaw
.
With it’s striking yellow and green plumage, the Large Footed Macaw is quite a beautiful parrot. It is also one of the largest parrots in the world. Found in the mountains of Central America, this macaw is uncommon, but not rare.
As the name implies, the feet of this bird are twice the size of any other macaw. This is because it used them to pick up longo nuts, which are about the size and shape of a football. They then fly high into the air and drop the very hard shelled nut of a rocky surface. Once the nut is cracked, the macaw can use its powerful beak and feet to tear it apart so it can eat the nutrisous meat inside.
It should be pointed out that young Large Footed Macaws sometimes drop the longo nuts in other areas, resulting in injured or dead animals and humans.
