Rare Birds: Red Barking Jay

.

Another member of the “Annoying Birds” category is the Red Barking Jay, found throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.

This medium sized jay has rusty red feathers and a normal jay life cycle. It is commonly found in parks, gardens and forests. It breeds in the spring and summer. It feeds mainly on berries and insects.

What makes this jay annoying is that, like many members of the corvid family, it can be an excellent mimic. It’s favorite thing to mimic is a barking dog, which it does very well and at all hours of the day and night. This does not endear it to dog owners or those who live near them, as one jay can set off dozens of dogs to barking.

Rare Birds: Ghost Owl

.

This very large owl has a rang that covers much of Mexico, the United States and Southern Canada. While not rare, it is uncommon to see it in the daytime or in urban areas.

Ghost Owls have a wingspan of well over 6 feet and even with wings folded, the owl stands 3 feet tall. As with all owls, they are superb night hunters and can take prey as large as a red fox.

The owl gets its name not only from its white feathers, but from the fact that people see it flying or sitting somewhere and think it is a ghost. Entire legends of hauntings in a given area can be attributed to Ghost Owl sightings.
