My Town, By Cora Hayes
330 Glass Street: Glass Street Market
Diagonally across the street from my house is the Glass Street Market, the oldest grocer in town. It started off in 1793 as Morgan’s Trading Post. Once the first settlers started putting down roots, around 1810, it got upgraded to Morgan’s General Sore. By 1853 it was the Glass Street Market and, despite some financial ups and downs, it is still in business and still owned by a Morgan, Richard Morgan, to be exact.
Richard is the great grandson of old Thaddeus Morgan, who founded the trading post. He does a fine job of running the store and is the last of his family left in town. He recently married Gail Norwood and they are going to start a family soon.
How soon? Probably as soon as the illegal gambling that goes on in the two unused storage rooms nets Richard enough to sell the store and move to a larger city. My sources tell me that the gambling takes place 3 nights a week. It’s purely cards and dice. Richard charges $5.00 a head entrance fee and there’s a 20 person limit. $300.00 a week is nothing to sneeze at. My guess is that the Morgans will be moving sometime in Spring of 1929, so, maybe7-8 months from now.
Next time, I’ll discuss one of the busier and stranger buildings in town.
