Sister Bomia’s Adventure Diary #23
Encounters A’plenty!
Ottersday 1, Sun God Month, Year 25 of the Golden Emperor
Dear Diary,
We left our camp at about an hour after dawn this morning. The forest is, as I mentioned last time, much more normal looking and less dark. The air was full of birdsong and many flowers were blooming. The morning was cool, but not cold. The humidity was noticeable and Halana remarked that it would probably get a lot worse as the day heated up. Overall, though, things were pleasant.
Until the ogres attacked.
There were three of them, Diary, and they looked somewhat different than our ogres, who pretty much just look like 7 foot tall very ugly white people. These ogres had mottled green skin, which helped them blend into the foliage. They were armed with large spiked clubs and only Amella’s quick reflexes and good horsemanship kept her from getting killed.
The battle was mercifully short once Grettin hammered the largest ogre in the chest and Olivia hit another with a Rain of Fire spell. Both of them went down and the third ran off at high speed. None of our party were hurt, but the horses were pretty spooked for a bit.
We found a trail running along a small river, so we followed it. About an hour later, we startled a group of small beings that looked like humanoid frogs. The jumped into the water, but only swam out a few feet before turning to look at us.
I decided to say the Prayer of Friendly Speech and see if I could talk to them. Despite being small, no more than 2 feet tall, they were fairly intelligent. Our discussion went like so…
Me: Hello there. We mean you no harm.
Them: What are you?
I explain who and what we are, then ask about them and this place.
Them: We are Kligs. This is the Winding River. You are in the Eternal Forest.
Me: What is beyond the Eternal Forest?
Them: There is no beyond! The forest goes on forever!
Me: Where does this river go?
Them: It goes to the great River of Doom! Monsters live there!
If there is one thing we have learned over the years, it is that primitive folk who never venture very far from their villages can’t tell you much about the wider world. I thanked our little friends and then we rode on.
The rest of our day went like this, Diary.
Beset by a swarm of bees when we passed too close to the hollow tree they were living in. I healed our stings once we were beyond them.
During our lunch break, a water spirit came out of the river to inspect us. Apparently, it took exception to Olivia, since it soaked her to the skin. She was NOT amused.
A couple of hours later, a group of about 15 Forest Goblins attacked us from high in the trees. We battled them for several minutes, with Amella taking a dart to the leg, Grettin getting a black eye from a thrown rock, Alana getting several bruises from rocks and a dart to the shoulder. Olivia cast a Shield spell and so took no injuries. I used my Ring of Blessed Protection to keep myself safe. Eventually, after injuring about half of the goblins, they ran off through the trees, laughing. At least they did not fling poo like the Swamp Goblins back home do.
Shortly before sunset, we arrived at a much larger river and found a nice spot to set up camp. We cast spells and blessings around it twice and will post overlapping watches tonight.
I don’t mind telling you, Diary, I hope tomorrow is a a much less exciting day.
