I Know a Guy: Edie Kim

When her friend Judy was having problems with an ex-boyfriend, Edie Kim was there to help her out. Edie was just that kind of person, always willing to do what she could.

The first thing Edie did was arrange for Judy to move from home to home in the Korean community. She knew that would only slow down the boyfriend’s attempts to locate her, so she also found a few places in the Chinese community. That would really slow him down, but only for a while.

Edie knew that she’d need some help with this problem, so she turned to her maternal grandmother. Gramma was as tough an old bird as ever was, having survived the Korean War, racism, three husbands, and the sexism that women found everywhere. If anyone could help, she could.

First, Gramma had Judy cut her long hair into a cute bob, then bleach it out. Then, they dressed the normally fashion forward young woman in something more punk inspired. Then, they changed the look of her glasses frames.

For over a month, Judy was okay, but then Edie got word that the boyfriend, who like Judy with long hair and fashionable clothes, had learned what she looked like. Enraged, he had now recruited several of his friends to help him find her.

When Edie told Gramma about that, the old woman got angry and said some really bad swear words in Korean. Then, in English, she said, “We need better help. Fortunately, I know a guy. Let’s go see Mr. Wing.”
