Chapter Forty Three: Dree Wins, Sort Of
Seeing the boy, Hadolfus began running toward him, heedless of the arrows flying and people dying.
“Give it to me!,” the Curator said as he closed in on Dree, his knife at the ready. The boy had no doubt that he would kill him once he got the crystal. Well, he would have to, because Dree would never give it up willingly.
The Curator was two steps away from his prize when the boy looked at him and said, “You are the unluckiest man on earth!” Quickly, the Curator wheeled around, slashing with the knife at chest level, only to be hit in the face by a pair of feet as Carso swung down out of a tree on a rope. The man was knocked completely over Dree and crashed into a tree some feet behind him. Not only was he knocked out, but he was going to be missing some teeth and nursing a broken nose when he woke up.
As Carso dropped onto the ground near Dree, the Townie boy looked at him in astonishment.
“You ran away from home to come find me? Are you crazy? You’ll be in big trouble!”
Carso shrugged and gave Dree a big smile.
“It wasn’t quite like that,” he began, “umm, well, ok, it was like that, but I couldn’t let you have all this fun alone. Besides, we’re in big trouble right now.”
Dree, said that was true, then gave Carso a hug and said, “Wait until you meet my friends Seyan and Lahn and their flying machine. Oh, and then there’s Bevan and Ala and this really smart dog, Sunset.
Carso was about to say something when the crystal rod Dree was holding began to glow. It got brighter and brighter until it was hard to look at. Dree tried to drop it, but couldn’t make his hand respond. Soon, the blinding glow was joined by a loud humming and Dree began to feel lightheaded.
Ala and Bevan ran up to the boys and tried to grab Dree, but were unable to touch him without getting a strong shock. When Seyan and Lahn got there, they fared no better. All they could do was watch Dree standing there, wavering a bit, but not falling. After about another minute, the humming and glowing stopped and Dree stood there blinking at them.
In the middle of everyone asking him if he was alright, he turned to Seyan and asked, “Are you the Grand High Curator?” When he said that, everyone stopped talking and looked at her.
“Uh, well, yes, I am.” It felt very strange to say that, but it was technically the truth.
Dree nodded, then handed her the crystal rod. “This wants to talk to you. Be careful, because it makes you feel funny in the head when it starts talking.” Then he sat down on the ground before passing out.
