More Gaming Ideas From Uncle Doc
Lately, I’ve been thinking of several RPG related concepts. First off is online roleplaying between friends spread out all over North America and the rest of the world. There are some cool “virtual tabletop” programs out there, and I’m sure they’ll only get cooler and easier to use as time goes by, but even the coolest among them runs afoul of two factors: time zones and scheduling. Now, scheduling has and always will be a problem for any gamer past college age. Doubly so for those who are married & working and quadruply so for those with children. Throw in a multi hour time difference and you can see how hard getting a virtual group together for regular play could be.
Another concept on my mind (never really off of it) is the whole Kingdom Building RPG concept. Starting from world building to civilization building to kingdom building to hero building/adventuring really appeals to me.
So anyway, it popped into my head that a couple of GMs on opposite sides of a country (say, my good friend smalley_smoot and I) could make this work on at least a semi regular (say, once a month or so) basis.
Next post, I’ll describe how. Would do it this post, but alas, I must go to work.
The devil will be in the details. Ditto finding a common time for persons spread across multiple time zones.
You almost need a concept/theme that takes into account persons dropping in and out at seemingly random intervals for your proposed exercise. A central place that is busy and where there are a few regulars yet at the same time strangers and old friends may wander in and out.
Like Rick’s Cafe in “Casablanca”. Or the Dutchman’s bar in the aviation outpost in “Only Angles Have Wings”.*

*Come to think of it, maybe that’s the reason most old-school D&D adventures start off in a tavern…
Or, Crom’s Retreat in Chantapho-by-the-Sea. This is the Rick’s, etc. of my campaign world.
Well, since you mentioned me . . .
I would be willing to think about it. Bill Reger is experimenting with whatever online gaming system has a Savage Worlds license. I haven’t checked in since just after GenCon but he was in a “Rippers” game (I think) with folks from Europe.
Doc Brian may be right that a central location (like Rick’s Cafe in Casablanca) might help.
