A Short Lecture

Pie Or Cake?

I will state right up front that I am an equal opportunity dessert eater. I will happily consume both pie and cake, to say nothing of cookies, doughnuts or any number of fancy pastries. And we will say nothing about them because we’re discussing pie and cake. Try to focus.

I suspect that many of you would also dive into a slice of pie or cake if offered to you. Both are delicious if properly prepared, although if my Aunt Edna ever offers you a slice of her coffee cake, I suggest washing it down with vodka.

But, for the sake of this lecture that I get paid by the word for, let’s assume that you are being offered your choice of both. Sadly, actually asking for both is seen as a dining faux pas, so choose you must.

Naturally, you must take into account your personal leanings on this subject, but then we come to comparing the offerings. For myself, a slice of apple pie will never beat out a slice of coconut cake, but that cake will not beat a slice of cherry pie. One must consider the variables. Does the pie or cake come with ice cream? Does the cake have extra thick frosting? Is one thing chocolate? Take your time and don’t rush.

I should also add that somebody, no doubt the person who read that I get paid by the word, will bring up cheesecake, hoping that they will be considered funny or just to cause trouble. Well sir, I shall tell you about cheesecake.

It is a pie masquerading, and none too well I might add, as some sort of odd cake. It goes straight into the pie column and that’s that for your supposedly witty question.

On the other hand, the hierarchy of desserts generally puts cheesecake right at the top, so who are we to argue? If you have the chance, order the cheesecake.

Good day.
