Sister Bomia’s Adventure Diary
We Dine With A Giant
Bearsday 1, Comet Month, Year 25 of the Golden Emperor
Dear Diary,
After spending several days getting up to the base of the Wall Mountains, we found that the remnant of the Great Road that we were following ended at an enormous pile of rubble.
There were thousands of boulders in a huge pile half a mile long and at least that wide at the bottom of the mountain. Grettin said that it looked like a section of the rock face had collapsed several centuries earlier. We looked all around the base and could not find a way into the mountain. Amella wondered if there had been some sort of lift system, but we saw no evidence of that.
Olivia said that it would take months of very powerful spells to move enough rock to find an opening, if there was one to be found. Tired and discouraged, we all sat down to rest.
I don’t mind saying, Diary, that I wanted to cry. We had great plans of exploring the continent and the Great Road, but now that seemed like it would not happen. Climbing over the Wall mountains, which are very tall, thin, razor sharp in places and very many, was probably impossible. I said a long prayer to the Mother Goddess asking for guidance.
And then, less than an hour later, a giant approached us. She was quite large, about 80 feet tall. She told us her name was Ragasar, then asked what we were doing. We introduced ourselves and told her our mission. She looked thoughtful for several seconds, then told us that she might be able to help us. She explained that about 200 yards on either side of the rock slide were holes that lead deep into the mountain. She went with us to inspect one and Grettin pronounced it a ventilation shaft for the main tunnel.
Oh, Diary, you cannot imagine our relief! True, the tunnels were too narrow and slick for our horses, but we would be able to use them. We all laughed and cheered and thanked Ragasar profusely. Then we invited her to stay for dinner.
She agreed to it, and with a Spell of Increased Diminution, Olivia got Ragasar down to a mere 15 feet tall. I preformed the Feast of Great Celebration and we soon had more than enough food. We drank and ate while Ragasar told us that she was on her way north, to the Kingdom of the Giants, where she hoped to find a mate.
Diary, it seems that male giants are smaller than females, by nearly a third! Women rule in giant society. My friends and I all allowed as how that sounded like a good idea.
After dinner, Ragasar bade us goodbye and continued on her walk. Olivia said that she would slowly grow back to her full size over the next couple of hours. We all agreed that, as giants go, she was very nice.
This morning, Olivia cast a Command spell on our horses, sending them to back to the convent in Palkus. We had made arrangements to do this in case the horses could not continue with us. The Sisters were told to sell them and keep the money. All of the saddles and tack went into Grettin’s Bag of Astounding Capacity.
The tunnel we are about to enter goes up at a steep angel for about 60 feet, then turns back downward ant a less steep angle. I am told this design is to keep rainwater from flooding things. At any rate, Amella is at the top of the bend and we have a rope to use in the climb up. I’ll write more soon, Diary, probably when we are through the mountains.
