Sister Bomia’s Adventure Diary

Guests Of The Aiya

Foxday 1, Roc Month, Year 25 of the Golden Emperor

Dear Diary,

Well, travel through the desert is not any better than it was the last time we did it. The major difference this time is that this is high desert and way down south in the Zamotek Lands, it was sandy & rocky & full of cactuses, while up here it is sandy, not so rocky and covered with clumps of brush that is both tough and home to spiders & snakes. Water is more frequent and less likely to be poisonous.

Our first day of travel went well, but on the second day, Grettin fell into a large hole that was a trap made by a huge form of ant lion. It grabbed her by the leg, but she quickly dispatched it with a whack from her axe. We helped her out of the hole, but she was limping a bit and in a bad mood all day. I will note here that the remains of the Great Road are reasonably easy to follow most of the time, bless the Mother Goddess.

On our third day, we saw a tortoise the size of a small house. It was not aggressive, so we left it alone. That day was a very hot one, so we rested most of the day and Olivia used up a large amount of her magic energy teleporting us to the top of a mesa about 3 miles away. It was risky, but we made it and only fell about 2 feet to the ground.

While the mesa was a good choice as a landmark, it was flat, barren, cold and windy all night long. Fortunately, the Mother Goddess answered my prayer for Divine Fire, which kept whatever side of our bodies facing it very warm. The other side was not at all warm, so we would all roll over every few minutes.

Yesterday, we encountered a large group of tall people fighting what looked like reptilian wolves. We joined in the fight and soon had the lizardwolves either dead or on the run. The people, known as the Aiya, invited us to their village. We accepted their invitation and followed them.

Their village is quite interesting, being in a large pit with homes and such being dug into the walls. Their homes are spacious and cool. They do all of their cooking out in the plaza, which they can mostly cover over with a very large canopy made of animal skins, should it rain.

The Aiya resemble standard humans, but their skin is a deep brown and the adults are all over 6 feet tall, some being close to 7 feet. They grow several crops that do well in the desert, as well as herding goats. Their food is mostly stews eaten with a very tasty flatbread. We were able to speak with them using various spells and items we have.

The Aiya practice ritual magic, so casting any spell can take hours or even days. On the other hand, when the spell is finally cast, it is extremely powerful. They do not seem to cast spells very often.

We spent last night and all of today here. We’ll be leaving in the morning and the Aiya tell us that when the Great Road reaches a hill some miles from here, it goes underground. I suspect it wil make for both cooler and much more dangerous travel.

I’ll write more soon, Diary.
