My Town, By Cora Hayes

331 Glass Street: The Snow House

On the south side of my property, you’ll find the Snow House, a fine old 3 story home built in 1872 by Wyndham Snow, a wealthy man who moved to town to become a land speculator. Sadly, just after he and his young wife moved into the house, the gold mine mine closed and he lost a bundle. Two years later, deep in debt, he jumped off the River Canyon bridge.

His wife turned the house into a girl’s school and ran it for 15 years before she and her second husband moved out to California. She sold the house in 1891 to Colonel James O’Doul, who moved his wife and 8 children into it. They were a loud and happy family and I liked them very much.

Today, in 1928, the house is owned by Harry O’Doul, 4th son of the Colonel. He and his wife run the Shamrock Cafe over on 3rd Street. Their 6 children, who range in age from 5 to 13, are pretty good kids, if a bit rambunctious. They are also smart as whips and, for a small fee, keep me informed about goings on all over town. The oldest, Annie, is a voracious reader with an incredible memory. I often send her off to the library to do research for me.

Next time, we’ll look at the ever changing inhabitants of the house to the north of me.
