I Know a Guy: Mr. Wing

Edie Kim was pushing her Gramma along in her wheel chair when she asked, “So, Gramma, how did you and Mr. Wing meet?”

I was his pimp.”

Edie stopped so suddenly she almost tossed Gramma out of the chair.

“WHAT?”

Gramma chuckled.

“We met back in 1933. I was 22, a brand new widow, and low on cash. He was 19, fresh off the boat from China, and broke flat. He didn’t have any skills to speak of, but he was well built and very good looking. I had a room for rent and he said he could do chores to pay the rent until he got a job. After a couple of week of seeing him shirtless working, I had the idea that some of the older wealthy ladies might pay for his company. He was pretty quick to agree. We made good money for a couple of years. Then he opened his first store and moved on. We’ve remained good friends.”

Edie resolved then and there to never tell her grandchildren anything about her own past, to spare them these feelings.

They arrived at the offices of Wing Family Grocers and were welcomed inside by the receptionist. Within moments, they were standing in Mr. Wing’s office. He greeted them with hugs and called for tea. They sat down and chitchatted for a bit, then Gramma and Edie told him the problem with Judy and her boyfriend.

So,” Gramma asked, “Can you help us, Billy?”

Mr. Wing assured her he could.

“Anything in the world for you, Anna.”

Mr. Wing got the names of the boys helping to track down Judy, then got the boyfriend’s name. He made a couple of phone calls, but he was speaking Mandarin, and Edie, who barely spoke any Korean, had no clue what he said. Gramma, however, seemed to follow things just fine.

“Those boys will all get visits from the police, at home, during dinner time,” Mr. Wing told them. “However, I know how these stalkers can be, so I’ll just call up a guy I know.”

He dialed a number, then after just a moment, said, “Let me speak to Jack Cho.”
