Out In The Woods: The Trail Gets Hard
Before you leave on your journey, my son, I must tell you that the faster trail is not the easier trail. The easy trail is a merchant’s trail, and covers 200 miles, stopping at many towns and villages. It is also patrolled well by the Imperial Army. These are people you will want to avoid. So, take the hard road. You will cut the distance in less than half and avoid any people along the way.
When you get to Tianshui, find the noodle house on the edge of town. Once you locate it, walk toward the river. Look to your left and you will see a small path, a game trail. Turn onto it and follow it. It is probably thick with vines and thorn bushes, but press on. In less than a day, you will see the first rock painted yellow, on the intersection of two paths. Turn right there and keep following the yellow stones.
The path through the forest will see you crossing rivers, scaling very steep mountains, hacking your way through undergrowth, and possibly fighting both beasts and demons. If your sword is true and you are determined, you will eventually come out just a few miles from Xi’An. Once you arrive there, your auntie and uncle will let you rest and heal before you go meet with the Three Eagles.
I pray that your hard journey is quick and enlightening, my son.
