DUCKS!: Old Spitfire

“Oh, I’ll tell ya about Old Spitfire. Biggest and fastest duck you’ll ever see! Hunters in this part of Minnesota have tried hundreds, maybe thousands of times to kill him, but he’s still alive. He’s been flying around for close to 30 years now, and ain’t so much as lost a feather to a shotgun.

How fast is he? Well, back about 10 years ago, a couple of kids from the university clocked him at 55 miles an hour. They also said he could do the tightest turns they had ever seen. They had no explanation for it, especially since Old Spitfire is about half again bigger that your average male Northern Pintail. They didn’t have an explanation for why he’s lived so long, either. Or why he seems so damned smart. Pretty much useless, they were.

I’m gonna let you in on a secret. Most of us older hunters wouldn’t shoot Old Spitfire if we saw him 10 feet away sittin’ still. We all kinda figure we had our chance when we were young and now, we’re all older and so is he and we’ll all just swap lies about how close we came to getting him. I sometimes wonder if he tell the other ducks about the times he avoided getting shot by us.”
