The Only Way Out: Of Las Vegas

“Damn, Jimmy, you’ve gotten yourself in deep shit now. The outfit has locked Vegas down hard until you get found, and everyone is looking for you. That 200 grand they put on your head has everybody hot.

Nah, you’re safe here, for a couple of hours. How’s your arm? Yeah, it doesn’t look too bad. You got lucky there. I’m not gonna ask what’s in the duffel bag, because I don’t want to see three million reasons why you might die.

So let’s see how you get out of town, eh? There’s one way, and you’re lucky it’s nearby and that I figured it out years ago when I thought I might have to do a fade to get away from Jeanie and that fucking family of hers. But then she left me for that rich Texan and now they’re his problem.

Anyway, that old building down by the corner, the one made of cinder blocks, with the big fence around it? Well, that was an access point for work on the main storm drain in this area, back when they were building it in ’44. It gets opened up about twice a year so an inspector can take a look at it. Takes about 15 minutes. Guy walks in, looks into the big hole in the floor, then leaves. He was last there a month ago.

Now, I got ahold of the keys to the place years ago and had ’em copied. So you can get in and out and I’ll lock up behind you. But it gets better. Out in my garage, I’ve got a small motorcycle. It runs great, but I very seldom ride it, and when I do, I haul it out in the desert in my van. Nobody around here even knows it exists.

You and I are gonna lower the bike into that drain, then you, that duffel bag, a full tank of gas, and that bike are gonna leave town forever. You’ll have to walk it out of the drain, which comes out about a quarter of a mile from the Sands. Then you’ll walk it down the dry creek bed another couple of miles, at least, before you start it up. I’d go at least 4-5 miles, because they have guys up on the roofs everywhere with binoculars and such.

About a half hour after you leave, I’ll use a hot police radio I have to send out info that you’ve been seen on the north side, near the train tracks. From there, you’re on your own. That tank of gas will get you about 140 miles.

Now let’s get that bike and you over to that drain.”
