Red Feather Gang Profiles: Central Sally
Connection: Intel Center
Since the Red Feather Gang was active between 1972 and 1978, using computers and emails to keep in touch with members who might be out on various jobs was not possible. Instead, they made use of a former Army intelligence staffer and retired librarian named Sally.
The setup was simple. In Sally’s home on the edge of a small midwestern town, there were three telephone lines. As far as the phone company knew, two of these lines were for boarders renting rooms. Of course, as long as the phone bill got paid, the phone company didn’t care.
When needed, Red Feather crewmembers would call one of the lines, Sally would answer, and then record everything they had to say. Most calls lasted less than a minute. Later, Sally would transcribe the recordings and await a call from a “Mister Jones”, who she would then read all the transcriptions to. Everything was in code, so even if someone were listening in, they wouldn’t hear much other than weather reports, stories about family members, or other ordinary things.
For her services, Sally earned $50.00 a week and the thrill of knowing that she was helping a group of young people work on some secret project. There would also be times when she would have a couple of weeks off, so she could take vacations to the places her employers sent her tickets to.
