The Horticultural Whore Returns…Episode 4: A New Plot

(cue the John Williams score)

I haven’t been writing much lately about my beloved, yet oft infuriating, garden. That will be changing as winter fades away and spring sproings. Here, then, is the first bit o’ garden bloggage for 2005…

I laid out my “Spinach & Lettuce” plot today. Unlike last year, this year’s crops will all go into the ground for growing. Last year I grew the lettuce and about a third of the spinach in containers, which worked well, but limited the amount of stuff I could grow. Of course, Grace and I did have frozen spinach to eat until about mid-last month, so the harvest was pretty big anyway.

This years plot is roughly 95 square feet and will be about 75% spinach of 4 varieties (Olympia, Tyee, Correnta, Bloomsdale) and 25% lettuce of 5 varieties (Endive, Black Seeded Simpson, Buttercrunch, Red Salad Bowl, Red Sails). I’m also going to plant some peas along the back border of this bed (which is right in front of our living room window) so that the pea vines will grow up along some string trellises and frame the window.

After the spinach and lettuce fade from late spring heat, I’ll probably plant the bed with a combination of garlic, chiles and assorted annual and perennial flowers.
