NoodleQuest…was, in the early days of computer games, one of the best selling games worldwide. While the graphics were simple and the sound was even simpler, the challenge of collecting bowls of noodles that gave you various powers or health points was apparently irresistible.

Characters started out with a stick and a spoon and left their home to battle first a rat and then progressively larger and more dangerous animals for better bowls of noodles and other loot.

The game was very popular in the US and Europe, but was a runaway success in Asia. It even spawned a manga and a cartoon series. All told, NoodleQuest sold 1.5 million copies worldwide.

The Alphabet: N is for…

Notes From The Other World…made it’s debut in 1884 in Paris. This book, supposedly the diary of the French explorer Alphonse Rennier, who had disappeared in Africa in 1876, told the tale of Rennier and 3 of his traveling companions in “the Other World, the Other Earth”.

The gist of the diary was that while in the Congo, the men came upon a strange sparkling mist that engulfed the four of them for several minutes before rapidly dissipating and revealing that they were now in a land of huge trees and strange new lifeforms, including humans. There were three moons and the sun was “somewhat redder in hue”. They had many adventures before the diary ended 361 days later in mid-sentence.

The publication of the book caused an uproar, with accusations of everything from hoax to astounding revelation. When the original diary was submitted for examination, several people, including the French Foreign Minister, swore the handwriting was Rennier’s. Even more amazing was that analysis of the dirt and pollen in and on the book revealed no less that 14 unknown species of plants.

The book sold millions of copies over the next 5 years and sparked many lively debates. No more diaries ever appeared and Alphonse Rennier was never again seen or heard from in this world.
