Places: Round Valley
Description: Round Valley, as of 1875, is a small town of roughly 340 people, not including another 300 who farm and ranch outside of town. The town was founded in 1853 by Hans Brenner, who built a general store, and his brother in law, Arvin Rittenhouse, who built a saloon across the road. The were soon joined by Dan Hocker, who set up a stable and blacksmith/farrier shop.
Since the road through town was the main rout across southern Colorado, they saw a fairly steady stream of business. Before long, a small hotel and a barbershop opened up. Still, the town barely had 100 inhabitants for many years. Then it got a protector in the form of the mysterious Mr. K.
Once word got out that this gunfighter was allowing no crime, aside from drunkenness and the odd fistfight, people began coming to check out the area. Within about 10 years, the town itself had over 300 inhabitants and almost as many more in the surrounding area. The railroad is scheduled to go through town in 1876, so a big population increase is expected. Having gotten wind of this, the people of Round Valley established a company specifically to sell land to the railroad at a good profit. Once the sale was done, every adult in the company got an equal cut of the money.
