A California Kid & Spider Story: The Junkyard Job: Part 3
The young lady known to her fellow thieves as Blondie Sanchez had just gotten home to the small apartment she shared with her older sister. Both were college students, the older majoring in teaching, while Blondie’s major was law. Her days were filled with classes, but if she didn’t have to prep for a heist, her nights were free for homework and relaxing in front of the television.
Or, on occasion, recounting the nearly forty thousand dollars she had earned in just under a year. And that wasn’t counting her cut from the Senator job. When the California Kid got that all squared away, she would be sitting on more than one hundred fifty thousand bucks. Law school would be paid for before she ever really got started.
As she grabbed a salad and a bottle of soda out of the fridge, Blondie felt a bit wistful about the fact in a couple of months, her contract with the Kid and Spider would expire. “Only a year of your time will we take,” he had told her just before last spring semester ended, “but I guarantee you will earn far more in that year than you could in any other.”
He had been right so far, and there would probably be a couple more jobs before things ended, but she was also thinking of how she would miss the thrills. Spider had told her that it was very easy to get addicted to breaking into places and being where you weren’t supposed to be, and he was right. The thrill that came after that first, simple job at the hunting lodge had been immense. Of course, before and during the job, she had been nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. At one point, she had really needed to pee, she was so nervous.
“So go pee,” Spider had said, “This lodge has four bathrooms and their all nice. Just remember to flush the toilet when you’re done.” She did, and then they stole ten thousand dollars worth of antique firearms. She had never had so much fun in her life.
Yeah, she was going to miss the thrills, for sure. Maybe she could take up skydiving as a substitute.
In the meantime, she was hungry and her sister made great salads.
Just a few blocks from where Blondie lived, Trix had just put two year old Bonnie to bed and was working on her homework when her mom sat down at the kitchen table with hot cocoa for both of them.
“How’s school going, honey?
Trix, whose real name was quite different, sat back and sipped her cocoa. Mmm, Mexican cocoa, her favorite. Her mom was simply the best.
“Oh, pretty well so far. I think I’ll do well on my finals. Next semester will be tougher, but I’m ready for it.”
Her mom smiled and then asked the perennial next question.
“And how are things going with Mr. Kidd and your job?”
Her mom had some ideas that she and the Kid might get romantic. Not that Trix would have minded early on, but now, she and Spider were, if not romantic, very friendly.
“It’s still all business, Mom. He hands me handwritten pages, I type them up. He dictates letters, I type those up. Then I mail them off and that’s that.”
Mom shook her head. “Is he gay? You’re good looking.”
Trix laughed. From what she had gathered from the verbal interplay between Spider and the Kid, he was anything but gay. He didn’t talk about his sex life, but it seemed he had a busy one.
“No, Mom, he’s not gay, just all business. In fact, I’ll be over there late on Friday night. He has three chapters done on his new book about 14th Century economics.”
“For the life of me, I don’t know how you even stay awake reading that stuff. Well, don’t stay out too late. We’re taking Bonnie over to your sister’s on Saturday for Perry’s birthday party.”
Her mother got up, kissed her, then went into the living room to watch some tv.
Getting back to her homework, Trix felt a bit guilty about lying to her mother, but telling her the truth would have been right out even if she had not signed a contract. Nope, better to think of how Mom would react when Trix bought them a nice house after she got her nursing degree.
