Pulp Villain Snapshots: Korr, Bringer Of Death

Real Name: Harold Wainwright

Location: Boston, Massachusetts

Modus Operandi: Sending wealthy men photos of his victims that were killed in grotesque ways, then asking for big money not to kill them.

Career Synopsis: In 1933, Wainwright was the last member of a very wealthy family and was rapidly going broke. One night, in a remote hunting lodge, he killed a lost hunter in a fit of drunken rage. The next day, he was both horrified and fascinated by the horribly beaten body. That same day, he formulated a plan to scare his rich neighbors into giving up money to stay alive.

He mutilated the body further, took photos of it, then buried it way out in the woods. Returning to Boston, he put together a terrifying costume and then sent the photos, plus one of himself in costume, signed it “Korr, Bringer of Death”, and sent them to Gordon Henry, a wealthy banker. Henry refused to pay, and despite police protection, was killed with a flaming arrow and a bottle of oil. Using a camera with a telephoto lense, he took many photos of the death by burning. These he sent to the next victim.

By the time he was unmasked and sent to prison, Korr had gotten money from 4 people and killed 3 others. He died in prison in 1956.
