Part 1: The Eastern End
This end is in the center of a large city on the shores of a great sea. The PCs may leave quietly or they may leave with great fanfare. Regardless, they are embarking on a journey that nobody has ever completed
So far, the farthest any returning explorers got was around 1,200 miles out. It was there that they were attacked by Great Trolls in a mountain pass, losing half their numbers before retreating. The three survivors who made it back swear that the road back was subtly different than the road there.
That was 90 years ago.
Two more expeditions went out after that, one 70 years ago and one 30 years ago. Neither returned.
From this city, the first 50 miles of road is well packed earth covered with sand. It is well maintained and ends at the border to this kingdom. From there, it enters the frontier.
