Little Monsters: Firesnatchers
Name: Firesnatchers
Size: Small, 6 inches
Environment: Anyplace that gets really cold
Notes: Totally fireproof
These small creatures look like dirty grey guinea pigs that walk upright. They are found in very high mountains, glacial areas and arctic/sub-arctic areas. They live in family groups of up to 30 individuals and are quite omnivorous.
If there is any sort of fire near them, large groups will come and literally inhale it. A pack of 10 can almost put out an ordinary campfire. A group of several hundred can stop a small forest fire before it gets larger. Fire based or fire breathing creatures fear these tiny creatures.
But what do they do with the fire they inhale? Why, they use it to heat their burrows. About 3 feet below every burrow is a large chamber filled with many large stones. The Firesnatchers breath their stolen fire onto them heating them up to around 300 degrees or more. The stones can retain heat for days, sometimes weeks, thus keeping the burrows above nicely warmed.
And yes, they can start fires that they allow to get larger, then steal all the fire for stone warming.
