Story Beginnings: The Adventure Of The Changed Men
It was in the spring of 1897 that my friend, Sherlock Holmes, began his investigation into one of the strangest cases of his career. A case that, had I not been involved in the pursuing of it, I would have written off as fiction.
We had just finished breakfast when our landlady, Mrs Hudson, knocked on the door.
“Come in, and tell your two friends to take a seat on the sofa,” Holmes said, his face showing only the slightest bit of interest.
Mrs. Hudson entered the room accompanied by two women whom I judged to be in their early 30s. They were of average height and weight, one a brunette and the other a blonde, and were dressed modestly. Definitely of the working class, they seemed a bit nervous as the sat down, which is not uncommon for those seeking out Holmes’ help. As Mrs. Hudson left, I poured them tea and reassured them that they were in a safe and friendly place.
Holmes spoke again. “My name is Sherlock Holmes. This is my good friend, Dr. John Watson. Now I you would be so kind as to introduce yourselves, we can then begin finding out how I might help you.”
The brunette spoke up. “Yes, Mr. Holmes. I’m Alberta Darrow and this is my friend, Florence Wills. We’ve come to you with a problem that makes us wonder if we’re not gone mad a bit.”
“It’s our husbands,” Mrs Will spoke up. “You see, they’ve changed over this last fortnight. Not a lot. Not even enough for somebody who doesn’t know them well to notice. But for a wife, the differences are plain as day.”
Holmes raised one eyebrow, which for anyone else would be like leaning in very close and excitedly asking for details. Instead, he simply said, “Please describe these changes.”
