To Make A Short Story Long: It Was Time Travel

(A tip of the old bandana to Riki Bruner for suggesting this theme.)

Short Version

We creating a time doorway.

Long Version:

Yes, that is indeed a pristine 14th century ceremonial goblet from Rome circa 1360. As to how we got it, well, you know we were doing experiments with the prototype quantum agitator from Select Dynamics. We had hooked it up to the nuclear power generator and Milbank, our semi-autonomous computer. After calibrating it to fire at a 24 centimeter slab of copper/uranium/sodium alloy, we fired it for 2.35 seconds, then took readings using the Stark Industries G-44 Omilyzer.

Well, imagine our surprise when we detected definite subquantum agitation! We thought it was also looking strange, so we set it aside until we could get Dr. Grieg up here. However, before he could get here, something amazing happened.

You see the slab began to glow, then expand to about 4 meters by 5 meters. Then it vanished and we were looking at…

Oh, yes, the goblet. Well, the thing is, we opened a doorway through space and time to a cathedral in Rome, then, not knowing what to do or how long the doorway/window would last, we reached I with the 12 foot long Grabatron claw and grabbed the easiest thing to take. Darned luck, too, since the doorway slammed shut right after that and the resultant wave of chronotrons returned most everything in a 12 meter circle to the state it was 20 years ago, which was mostly raw materials, but Dr. Rendell is now 24 again.
