Unlike many of my friends who have commented on the death of Don “Mr. Wizard” Herbert, I am old enough to have watched his first television show, way back in the late 1950’s/early 1960’s. The show had a profound effect on me and did more to encourage my interest in science than anything else.
Thank you, Mr. Wizard. You did good.

While I’m not nearly as gnarled and ancient as you are, I did recall reading in the 1970s some of the Mr. Wizard science books that he wrote.
I also saw a few of the later scientific demonstrations he did on other shows (?Nickelodeon).
As a populizer for science and the scientific method to younger fans (heck, there were at one time 50 THOUSAND “Mr. Wizard” scientific fan clubs by 1965. This is a tremendous loss in many ways, and there really is no one else filling this void at this time.

I am more than jealous of you getting to see “Watch Mr. Wizard,” which ceased production shortly before I was born… “Mr. Wizard’s World” on Nick was weak tea. And I’m remembering a color version of a Mr. Wizard show on NBC in the mid-Seventies, but I might be out-o-my-skull.
