Good News & Bad News!: About That House!
Good: Yessir, young lady, that house down there on Hatterson Road is just full of stuff, an’ been that way since way before the Civil War. Back then, my Grandpap was a young man of 20 with a farm right here on top of this hill. Yes, I know you can’t tell there was a farm here, but there was. Grandpap was born over in Coal Valley in 1801 and he said he heard rumors about that house when he was 6 or 7, and it was old then.
Anyway, I’m 80 years old and I’ve been living here since my folks passed away back in 1885. I’ve looked down on that place near every day since, and I’ve seen things. Why, one evening about 3 years ago, a big black car pulled up there, then a truck loaded with crates. It was bootleggers, probably come up from Kentucky. While a few fellers unloaded the truck, a few more started clearing away the weeds and vines from the walk. Took them about an hour to get everything into the house. About then, clouds moved in front of the moon and I couldn’t see through the dark. When the clouds passed a few minutes later, they were gone. And that liquor is still there.
Bad: Now, before you get all excited about there bein’ a big bunch of old stuff and liquor in there, I’ve got a warnin’ for you. See, I went down there the next day, not for the booze, but to confirm what I’ve seem many times over this half of my life.
See, that house kills the people that bring things into it. If you look through the window, you’ll see all manner of things left there by soldiers, hobos, lovers, criminals, and the just plain curious. You’ll also see bloodstains and bones all over. The house has killed a lot of people.
Now, you might wonder why nobody has come looking for those dead folks. Not the families, the armies, or the police has ever looked inside that house. Why? Because all trace of anyone ever going in there is gone. Those weeds and vines the bootleggers cleared? Grown back like they were before the cutting. The car and truck are gone, just up and vanished. I have no idea where they went, and I’m not sure I want to know.
So now you and your investigator friends now know what you’re getting’ into. If you still want to go have a look, I wish you well.
