The Alphabet In A Week: E…F…G…H

E is for Elemental Army, an army made up of not true Elementals, but golems made from Essential fire and/or earth. They were used on Earth 351- K during the Prophet Wars in the 4th Century. Most historians agree that it Was their creation, and the spells used to stop them, that finally depleted the Earth of all magical energy.

Little is known of the actual creation of the Elemental Army, but it is generally believed to be the handiwork of the Wizard Anak Imoon. She was known to be very powerful in those days of waning magic, as well as being a fanatical follower of the prophet Zaa im Salakan. One text written after the Elemental Army went on the march described her as “Giving all of her body, mind, and sacred essence for the Prophet.” This would confirm the theory that a spell of such magnitude consumes the caster.

The army came out of the desert on July 10th, 452, and began marching west from Harabia toward Igpti at a pace of about 5 miles per hour. They terrified all who saw them and made it easy for the Prophet’s Chosen to loot and burn the abandoned towns and villages. Far to the west, panic was setting in among the great cities.

The Elemental Army was stopped just 3 days from the first city, Rakishi, by a torrential downpour of Essential water. After 3 hours, the fire in the Elemental Army went out and that quickly lead to the earth portion washing away. After that, it was just a matter of the “true” prophet, Kassir Kassar, leading his much larger army of followers east, slaying all infidels in his way.

The last recorded magic spell on Earth happened one day after the Elemental Army fell. It was a Spell of Sleep cast by a young Wizard in a far northern land. Since than, real magic has not been observed or used over the past 18 centuries.

F is for Faruq, The Information Man, a well known information broker and all around fixer in Cairo from 1912 to 1939. He could be found most often near the waterfront, at a small cafe. He constantly received information from a wide variety of sources, mostly via pre-teen children who acted as messengers.

Almost nothing is known of Faruq outside of his business. Even his true last name is in doubt, although some say it was Hadad. He is believed to have been born between 1887 and 1891, in Cairo. If he had any wives or children, it is unknown. Likewise, his whereabouts after May of 1939 are a mystery.

Faruq bought and sold information to anyone willing to pay his price, with steep discounts given to the police and certain other powerful organizations and individuals, of course. While he never broke the law himself, the same could not be said of certain of his customers. On the other hand, he also helped out many people who sought to do good, not just with information, but by getting them things they needed.

It is generally thought that Faruq left Cairo, and probably the African continent, either after getting on the wrong side of the Nazis, or by joining up with some band of do-gooders. The world may never learn the truth.

G is for Gorillo, was the kaiju star of 4 motion pictures made by Tanaka Studios between 1959 and 1966. These films, “Gorillo”, “Return of Gorillo”, “Gorillo Meets The Glob”, and “Giant Monster Rampage”, were made to directly compete with the flood of kaiju films being made by larger studios. Like those films, the Gorillo movies became staples of drive ins and Saturday afternoon television shows in the US and Canada.

According to the movies, Gorillo was a giant ape mutated by atomic fallout that gave him “Energy Eye Beams” and the ability to absorb electricity. He was listed as 90 meters tall, although in “Gorillo Meets The Glob”, the energy from a downed flying saucer caused him to grow to 120 meters tall.

There were plans for a fifth Gorillo film. But Tanaka Studios got bout out by a larger studio and the project was shelved. Gorillo would not resurface in a movie until 2006, when he appeared as part of a large group of kaiju in “Enter The Kaijuverse”.

During his 4 film career, Gorillo battled the following other kaiju: Fire Giant, Terrapinar, The Glob, Mecha Gorillo, Dinodragon, Ice Creature Z, Atomic Octopus, and Kappa Kaiju. He also went up against aliens twice.

H is for Horrors In White, a type of undead that plagued the Central Kingdoms for nearly a century. First seen in the winter of 1205, these corporeal undead would always be dressed in long white hooded robes. Their skin was also very pale and hung loosely on their bodies.

The Horrors In White first came on the scene after the mass suicide of the Cult of Estrix members. The exact number of members who died is unknown, but believed to be around 1,000. The suicides took place on the Eve of the Dead, in early winter 1204. Along with their leader, who was known only as “Father”, the cultists drank a deadly poison of unknown origin. Since the event took place outside and in several locations, and in a very early freezing cold, nobody even went looking for them until 2 days had passed. By then, no bodies were to be found. The first Horrors in White started showing up two months later, in mid-winter of 1205.

Horrors in White only came out during cold weather, day or night. They would creep around until they found a humanoid, then grab them in a near unbreakable embrace. As the held them, they would absorb all the victims body heat and a good portion of their moisture. The corpses were always found shriveled and frozen solid.

Various royal guards, armies, and just plain mobs hunted the Horrors in White until 1298, when it is believed that the final five were burned up in a basement of an abandoned mill. Since it has been 147 years since anyone has seen a Horror In White, most experts agree that they are all dead.
