Secrets Revealed!: Who The Mysterious Avenger Really Was
It was my grandfather, Eduardo Gomez Benitez. He was an athletic and educated young man of 22 when he came north and started making money with his string of panaderias, and later mercados.
He saw all the crime and injustice in the Latino communities here in Texas, so he decided to do something about it. A dark gray suit, a gray & black luchadore mask, a pair of thin gloves, and a good pair of shoes were his costume. A pair of pistols, a couple of knives, and a blackjack were his equipment.
Grandpa set about buying the loyalty of a bunch of poor folks who funneled information to him. Using that information, he started dishing out some very final justice to bad people, both brown and white. Cops and criminals alike wanted him dead, but he kept them looking in the wrong places, because the white folks swore he was white, and the brown folks swore he was a Mexican from down south, because of his accent.
He had some close calls over the 15 years he was active, but by the time he retired, there were a dozen masked vigilantes inspired by him. It wasn’t until he was a few days away from dying, at age 102, that he told me his secret. And now, as I’m nearing 92, I’m telling you.
