The Long & Winding Road

Part 5

The Lake In The Hills

The steep foothills of the Razor Mountains give way to low rolling forested hills at the beginning of this portion of the Road, which runs west in a meandering fashion for about 70 miles. The Road surface is still gravel, but it’s a very smooth gravel.

In the center of these hills the Road goes around the northern end of a very large lake that is fed from streams coming off the mountains. The lake is about 22 miles long, from 5 to 8 miles wide, and no deeper than 60 feet anywhere.

The lake is surrounded by several villages and a couple of good sized towns. More towns and villages lie further out in the hills. The people seem friendly, and are amazed to see anyone coming out of the Razor mountains.

These hills and forests have few dangers, aside from the rare outlaw or two.
