A California Kid & Spider Story: The Hot Job

This is the story of an art heist that takes place during a Fourth of July party, and what each person in the team was doing.

Chief Richards

Jack Richards was 60 years old. He had shitty knees, male pattern baldness, two alimony payments, and a 22 year old girlfriend who liked nice things and exotic vacations. His pension from 30 years as a cop didn’t cover enough of that. When he figured in the grand or so a month he made setting up security for Senator Jervison, he was just barely staying afloat. He’d been thinking of starting over somewhere else, but that would take a big chunk of change.

So when this clean cut Ivy League guy had asked him what he’s do for 50 grand, his answer had been, “That depends on what you need.”

The guy, who gave his name as Hanson, told him he represented somebody that Senator Jervison had incriminating evidence on, and that he was willing to pay to get it. This came as no big surprise to Jack, because he was pretty damned sure that most of the pols in DC had stacks of stuff on each other and most of the people they dealt with on a regular basis.

Hanson explained that his team would steal the packet of info during the big 4th of July bash. All he needed Jack to do was handle the off duty and retired cops, making sure that they rotated as normal, but with the thieves knowing who was who and where they’d be. Simple enough.

Of course, there was no way a gang of thieves were after just a packet of information. They probably had jewelry and things like that on their minds, too. Jack didn’t care what they took, because he was going to have somebody watching Hanson and everyone else leaving the party. He figured he’d add another 50 grand to his share once he found out where they were staying.

He wouldn’t be splitting it with the dozen guys working the party though. Hanson’s idea for dealing with them would give him a reason to hand out an extra C note to everyone for their “unexpected troubles. After that, former Chief Richards would take a couple of weeks to say goodbye to friends, then maybe go find a place in California near a beach.

For now, though, he was at his table on the back patio that was closed off to guests. In a few minutes, he’d walk around and check with his men. Then he’d come back and radio his nephew Bobby to keep a sharp eye on the front gate.

It was 1 hour until showtime.
