A World Without…: Work
“I mean, work isn’t completely gone. There are plenty of people still doing things they like to do. Heck, my brother builds houses with his friends because they like doing it. Of course, most houses are built by nanobots, but some folks prefer the old fashion kind. But yeah, people do still work at jobs, if they want to. It’s just that most people do other stuff as they feel like it.
Well, it started around 1961 when those guys from MIT built a hamburger cooking robot. Those were popular and soon replaced human burger flippers. Next thing you know, it’s 20 years later and robots are everywhere. Oh, no, the government here in the U.S. Made laws saying that if you aren’t paying a human to do it, you can’t raise the price by much. That pissed off big business, but they were soon gonna have bigger troubles.
Oh, sure, things like free education and universal health care and extensive public transportation made the transition smoother. Toss in the Art Revolution and the big advances in computer science and then the Worldwide Web, and next thing you know, tons of folks were just working part time.
When the Droid Evolution hit in the 2010s, that was it for anyone working low paying jobs or dangerous jobs. Oh, and bankers and stockbrokers and the like were a dying breed. Computers took their jobs.
So yeah, now we get our Universal Incomes and we spend our time doing what we like and making the world a better place. Pretty cool, eh?”
