Strange Shops: The 24/7 Market

(A tip of the old bandana to Alan Portman for inspiring this theme.)

Most of the time, for probably 99.99% of the people that stop in at the 24/7 Market on the corner of 6th and Redmond, things look pretty normal. A small bodega selling the usual stuff and some very tasty homemade soup. They have a cat named Vega and the staff, usually only one or two folks at a time, are all Middle Eastern and between 25 and 40. It’s like pretty much every bodega in the city.

During the day.

But around the 10:00 PM shift change, things get a bit odd. First off, the guys, and it’s always a guy, behind the counter, never looks quite the same every night. I mean, it’s the same guy, but one night he has a gotee and the next night a full bear and the next night he’s back to the gotee but he’s fatter or taller. It’s very strange.

And then there’s that end rack on the third row in the rear. Most of the stuff there is the same candy, nuts, etc, every night, but there are always 2 or 3 things you’ve never seen and may never see again. Like Fig Rolls or Curry Gum or Lion Bars. Lion Bars are great, by the way. But they might be there for a couple of nights, then gone for a couple of months.

Finally, there’s the old woman who walks in at 1:03 AM every night, goes straight to the back door, opens it, and leaves. Just walks straight through, never says a word. She looks old as hell, too. Maybe 90. She never looks left or right and never speaks. If you ask the guy behind the counter, whose name is always Hamid, about her, he’ll just say “owner’s mother.” It’s creepy.

So, I don’t know what’s going on, but it’s strange.
