…they were big alligators
Critter Con 14
Con Day 3: Gaming, food, the Dealers Room, more food, and pub crawling.
Here, in brief, is how things went for several of our extended crew as far as gaming went on Saturday.
Grandpa: Ran Part One of his “Reverse Dungeon” for 4 hours, ate tamales, then played Ogre. After that, he did a 1 hour seminar called “The Incredibly Lazy DM”.
Grandma: Along with Auntie Mary, Auntie Holly, Lettie Crane (a cat), and Roxy Murphy (another cat), played in a D&D game run by and designed for females. Later, after eating a sandwich, Grandma joined us in the Dealers Room, where she bought many dice and much artwork.
Uncle Spike: Apparently, today was “Uncle Spike Does Seminars Day”, because he was on the panel for three, then went to two more. Not sure what he had for lunch.
Aunties Avis & Ginie: They did seminars and board games, then hit the Dealers Room. I’m told they had pasta for lunch.
Uncle Peter: He ran one of his “Man From U.N.C.L.E.” games, then ran another RPG for a bunch of kids.
Mom & Sam: They played in a dog only LARP that lasted for 6 hours. After a lunch at Big Slabs O’ Meat, they napped until dinner time.
Your Two Humble, But Very Cute, Reporters: We played some card games and checked out the Costume Parade. After a nice lunch at India Underground, we hit the Dealers Room hard. Tucker now owns a second chainmail collar, a silver tail ring that has two dragons fighting, a bunch of “Dogs Do Dungeons” adventures, 14 cute little matchbox sized games, and about 200 dice.
Cupcake now owns three cute finger rings and two toe rings, a claymore sword, 5 t-shirts, signed copies of an NHT designed RPG called “Forest Romance” and the two supplement books for it, a card game called “Bitch, Please!”, and about 200 dice.
Right around 6:30, we all went to dinner at Mistress Diana’s Dungeon Diner. As always, the food was excellent, the service was even better, the ambiance was fun, and watching some of our human group still blush after all these years was both hilarious and cute. It was a leathery/fleshy good time.
At 8:00 pm, we all started the Gaming Pub Crawl, which entails spending at least 15 minutes in each of the following pubs and playing part of a big story, with the PCs hopping from world to world, the genre of each being determined by the pub’s theme. The pubs were…
The Wistful Maiden (D&D style fantasy)
The Pen & Paper (1930’s pulp writers seeking story ideas)
Nick’s On Broadway (1950’s detectives)
The Tumbling Dice Tavern (D&D style fantasy, but with gamers from here)
The Black Pearl (Pirates!)
The Three Dragons (High magic fantasy)
The Pub At The End Of Time (Monty Python meets Doctor Who)
Starpub 7 (space opera)
The Cobalt Club (pulp crimefighters, duh!)
Lovecraft’s (you know the drill here)
The Happy Gnome (fairy tale style fantasy)
The Silver Dollar Saloon (the old west, pardner)
You could start at any of them and you’d be given a card. Each pub punched the card and at the last one, when you finished the gonzo adventure, you got a free drink and a commemorative D20. You’d also have been playing and/or drinking for at least 4 hours. Auntie Avis, who drinks very little but played the game, said that the game was “goofy and fun, like your grandfather”. It was actually kind of amazing how much adventure the various GMs were packing into 15 or so minutes. It helped that most of the adventures began in media res.
Note that there are plentiful non alcoholic drinks available, as well as synthehol and cannabis edibles. That last made us think of Auntie Silky, who would have finished the crawl well baked on edibles, as I believe both Mom and Sam did.
Time to sign off, but we’ll be back tomorrow with coverage of the final day of the con.
