Legendary Snakes: The Snake God Of Venus

When the Royal Astronautical Society’s 1885 mission to Venus landed on that hot, swampy planet, one of the first things the natives told them about was the Snake God. According to the natives, the Snake God was 300 feet long, always hungry, and could swallow 10 adults at a time. As far as those natives knew, the Snake God roamed widely across the continent. They had only encountered it once in about 50 years, at which time it was chasing a herd of bison sized creatures known as vundaks. They had lost half of their village to the stampede. Anxious to see such an enormous creature, the scientists told the ship’s captain to take then all aloft to hunt for it. After cruising at an altitude of 1,000 feet for 3 weeks, they finally spotted the Snake God sleeping in a clearing created by an old lava flow. Dropping down to a lower altitude, they reported to the orbital base camp that they had taken many photos of the creature and were getting closer for more detailed photos and a few measurements. That was the last anyone heard of them. It wasn’t until the 1893 mission to Venus that the remains of their ship was found. It had been bitten nearly in two.
