Chapter Nine: Dree Diverted

Dree had almost made it to the foot of the stairs when his mother stepped out in front of him, hands on her hips and that look in her eyes. Work was about to be piled on his shoulders until he groaned under the load. It just wasn’t right to make a boy his age do chores!

His mother did not waste time. “Well, Dree, it’s nice of you to finally stop by home. So glad you could visit us. Now, start clearing off the tables in the main room, then get to washing dishes. After that, the floors need mopping and I want you to run over to get some new mugs from Miss Jurdenfal.”

“But mom…,” he began, knowing it would do no good to argue with her, but driven by the millenia old childrens urge to give it a try anyway.

“No buts, mister!” Came the equally ancient reply. “You’ll get moving right now or I’ll have your father deal with you.”

No winning there, Dree thought. Dad would just add a few chores of his own, some of which involved jobs Dree really hated. With the sigh of overworked and oppressed children everywhere, he headed into the main room of the inn and started clearing tables. With any luck, he might find some pocket change and it wasn’t like his Greaty was going anywhere anytime soon.
