What Happened: Gojira attacked Japan at Yokosuka in the early morning hours. The creature was 150 feet tall, incredibly resistant to harm, and could vomit up something that bursts into flames on contact with the air. It was also quite a bit faster moving than our 1954 movie version. It headed toward Tokyo, destroying everything in it’s path. All Japanese military ships, planes, and personnel were ordered home to fight it.
Naturally, the attack on Pearl Harbor never happened. In fact, when word of the monster attack got out, the United States sent ships and planes to observe and offer help. Japan refused any help for the first month. Back in the USA, newsreel footage of the situation caused the public to question our military readiness should some monster attack. The result was not quite the rapid leap into building up the military that we had, but it was big. A few “rumors of creature sightings in the Atlantic” and the need to “test our new forces” gave FDR all he needed to go to war with Germany.
The End Result: Fighting on only one front allowed the Allies to win the war by August, 1943. Gojira ravaged Japan for 2.5 months, even after the government gave in and asked for help from the United States. That help didn’t do too much, and the creature finally went back into the sea and disappeared.
Scientists were at a loss to explain the creature or where it went to. Japan was a broken country, with billions in property damage and 1.3 million people dead and three times that number injured. The country would not fully recover for nearly 30 years.
Meanwhile, to this day, local time March 11th, 2009, the nations of the world are still on guard for another kaiju attack.
