The Alphabet Bestiary: X Is For…Xonochitl
Name: Xonochitl
Type: Sapient Felid
Size: Medium 5 feet long, 30 pounds
Habitat: Desert Mountains
General Information: Xonochitl are a feline species that look very much like a small cougar with slightly larger eyes and deep red fur. They live exclusively in the desert mountain ranges of central Nixtenia, usually above 1,000 feet elevation. Unlike most feline species, they are not obligate carnivores, although meat does make up about 80% of their diet. Being sapient, they have figured out how to grow many of the vegetables they eat.
While not particularly reclusive, they are seldom spotted by travelers. This is partly due to their coloration blending in with the red rock that is common in those mountains, but mostly because they avoid humanoids due to the danger involved in being around them. The notable exception would be the Oxcapa people, who live in and near the mountains. These people protect the Xonochitl and are repaid in kind by the cats.
Xonochitl live in pairs, rearing 2-4 young every third year. The young remain with them around 18 months before leaving. The lifespan of a Xonochitl averages about 30 years.
